MATZ, William Paul "Bill," died peacefully on August 18, 2020 in Santa Rosa, CA. Bill was born on December 14, 1948 to Melvin and Margaret Matz in Eureka, CA and was the oldest of two sons. Bill loved to talk about history specifically military as he was very proud of his own accomplishments in the U.S. Navy as well as just being apart of something bigger. His military career would take him to places in Asia such as Vietnam and Thailand. He would frequently volunteer at the Santa Rosa Veteran's Building where they would hold their Vet Connects on Monday’s where he would give free legal advice to fellow veterans on a number of different subjects.
Within MOAA (Military Officer's of America Association), Bill was the chapter president for Santa Rosa appearing with other vets in the Rose parade many times he loved being in his uniform and seeing other vets in theirs. He was also very active within the church and any congregation he belonged to going on many mission trips to help build homes in central/southern America as well as spread the word of God which was something he held very dear.
Languages were another of his passions as he spoke Spanish, German, and Portuguese and loved to immerse himself deeply in new cultures as he loved the diversity of the world and it’s many people. He was also a member of MENSA an organization for people with particularly high IQs. Whether he was at home or abroad he was always able to find a common ground with someone regardless of who they were because he treated everyone the same with courtesy and respect just like how he would want to be treated. He also studied and embraced his own heritages Bill was an active member of the Caledonia club in San Francisco which is a Scottish heritage organization that also holds culturally relevant events such as the Highland games.
Bill is survived by his wife Erica, son Phillip and younger brother Gerry.
A private viewing for family and friends was held previously at Windsor Healdsburg Mortuary. Immediate family and close friends will gather for a Graveside Service on Monday, September 14, 2020 at 12:30 p.m. at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery located at 5810 Midway Road, Dixon, CA 95620. The United States Navy will be rending full military honors as part of the committal service.
