Melvin Bacon, Jr., died peacefully on June 20, 2021 in Yountville, CA.
Melvin was born on September 6, 1929 in Sebring, FL to Melvin and Hattie Bacon. He worked as a bell captain at the Cherokee Hotel in Sebring, Fl. At the age of 18, Melvin enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on August 18th, 1952. He served in the Korean war and also spent three years in Japan and spoke some Japanese. Melvin also served as an advisor for the Vietnam War. He left Florida to be stationed in Hawaii with his wife, Annie Mae (“Cherry”) and their children, Jacquelyn (twin sister Ruth who died at birth), Melvin III (“Skip”) and Gregory, where they lived for six years. He loved Hawaii and lived in Kaneohe Bay and enjoyed island life with his family. He was discharged from the Marines on August 18th, 1958.
Later Melvin and family moved to San Francisco, and he worked as one of the top-rated chefs in the bay area at “Victoria Station.” He also had his own restaurant on campus at Stanford University named, “Mel’s Haven.”
Melvin is survived by his loving daughter, Jacquelyn Bacon Martinez; son, Gregory Moore; son-in-law, Anthony Martinez; 8 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; as well as many other extended family members. Melvin was a big man with a big heart and was happy and proud of his entire family.
Melvin is preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Ruth (Jacquelyn’s twin sister), his beloved son, Melvin “Skip” Bacon, III, and his beloved grandson, Juan Anthony Martinez.
Melvin will be buried with military honors along with his beloved wife “Cherry” at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery located in Dixon, CA. They were married for 68 beautiful years!!
