Jon "Tony" Lama
Jon, better known as "Tony," passed away on May 2, 2020 at a location off campus from the Veterans Home. Jon was 91. He had been a member of the Yountville Home since 2016. He was born on April 3, 1929 in Rochester, New York to Josephine and John Lama. After high school graduation, John continued working in the family grocery business until he was drafted into the US Army. He served during the Korean Conflict from 1951 to 1953.He worked in The Army Security, spending 1 year in Korea, above the DMZ, and the remaining time in Japan.
After the military he married and soon had a family. He attended 3 years of college, then entered the insurance industry, specifically with Prudential. The family moved to San Francisco where Jon continued his insurance business. He eventually opened his own brokerage in San Rafael. He retired after more than 50 years in the business.
He and his friend, Carol enjoyed running many road races and marathons. They ran in 60 races and a marathon in Ireland. He also enjoyed reading and doing Sudoku. He was a passionate member of the Catholic Church. He was loved by everybody at the Home.
He is survived by his son, Bret, daughter, Hollie and friend, Carol, daughter-in- law Midori Liu and grandson, Dexter.
He will be buried at the Veterans Home Cemetery at Yountville.
