Alan Ward, 87, passed on to his longed for rest on February 20, 2021 in Santa Rosa with his loving wife Marilyn by his side. Alan Ward, 87, passed on to his longed for rest on February 20, 2021 in Santa Rosa with his loving wife Marilyn by his side. Their marriage of 52 years gave them the joy of three wonderful children; oldest son Larry, daughter Renee, and younger son Christopher. All three were able to say their goodbyes in the days preceding Alan's death. He was the proud patriarch of a large extended family. Beside his three children, there were eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Alan was an Air Force veteran serving during the Korean conflict. After military service, he found his calling in transportation, driving for Trailways and then Greyhound Bus Lines. A very popular driver on routes to Fort Bragg and through Sonoma to San Francisco, he also drove often to Eureka, Lakeport and charter buses to the Geysers for PG&E.
After retirement Alan and Marilyn became full-time RVers for many years, snowbirding between Oregon and points south and east. finally coming to roost in Springfield, Oregon. They spent over a decade there enjoying the many unique events associated with that area, including the Country Faire, the Saturday market, the U of O sports events, and of course the proximity to the Oregon Coast.
Also an athlete himself, Alan was a runner for many years. He competed in numerous local running events and even had three marathons to his credit. A lifelong basketball and baseball fan, the Giants the Warriors the Red Sox and the University of Oregon men's and women's teams were his favorites.
Alan was born in Portland Maine and grew up on Peaks Island in Casco Bay. He attended St. Francis Xavier University in Canada before being drafted. Alan is preceded in death by his parents Harry and Alexandrine Ward, his brother Robert Ward, his niece Debbie Ward, and his great-granddaughter Penelope Casey.
As per his wishes, there will be no formal service. A family gathering is planned for this summer. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew him and loved him. When thoughts of Alan cross your mind, wish him joy in his Heavenly home and smile.
